The Meaning of Structure/Function

The term: Structure/Function is a core “thinking tool” of physiology and is extensively relied upon in this blog. An example is our “Startle Reflex”, which when activated, immediately freezes the structure, providing the function of immobility, making it more difficult to visually isolate our form from the surroundings. Using this tool offers immediate clarity for evaluating physiology, yet after decades of use, for this writer, the meaning of the term continues to be refined.

This paper by Joel Michael digs into the weeds of some of the concept’s varied applications and meanings and is a good reference for anyone interested in the Manual Therapy body of knowledge. I would add that my understanding of the Structure/Function concept is even more encompassing than the one defined in the paper.
